James A. Robinson and Daron Acemoglu are coauthors of ‘
Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty’, a book that presents a provocative new theory of political economy that explains the why the world is divided into nations with wildly differing levels of prosperity. Robinson will be joined by Steve Broadberry, of the London School of Economics, for a discussion about his book and why it is institutions, and not climate, geography or culture, that explain the difference in prosperity between nations. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
Leigh A. Gardner will discuss her book, ‘T
axing Colonial Africa: The Political Economy of British Imperialism’ with Gareth Austin (Graduate Institute of International & Development Studies). The booked explores the revenue raised in the British colonies in Africa, and shows how efforts to balance the budget shaped colonial public policy at every level and how these compromises made in the face of financial constraints shaped the political and economic institutions that were established by colonial administrations and inherited by the former colonies at independence. Copies of the book may be pre-ordered at the event.
